The rapid progress in the science of nanotechnology offer the prospect of applications in many areas and could disrupt our world tomorrow. Already, nanoparticles are used in the cosmetics industry. Developments are underway for their use in drug delivery, tissue reconstruction and medical imaging to name the field of medicine. Nanoparticles whose size frequently does not exceed that of some molecules (their diameter is of the order of a millionth of a millimeter) are likely to be absorbed by the cells may change their behavior. Also, identify and measure their impact on living organisms is an issue of paramount importance.

A team of scientists with Czech participation helped to clarify the role of sulfuric acid in the formation of aerosols in the atmosphere, which is important for studying climate change. Aerosols, unlike the greenhouse gases cool the atmosphere.

Aerosols are a mixture of microscopic solid particles or droplets dispersed in a gas. In the atmosphere reflect and absorb solar radiation. Are used as condensation nuclei for the formation of clouds.

Scientists have long assumed that the smallest particles of matter involving sulfuric acid, but they were not able to prove. In cubic centimeter of air can be from one million to ten million molecules of this acid and the results of various measurements, it appeared that, at such concentrations should not sulfuric acid, play an important role.

The discovery has implications for better understanding of the processes that occur in nature, but also for technologies that use superconductors and nanoparticles

Bookmark and Share

Antifreeze proteins that prevent the freezing of a body in extremely cold places are also able to prevent the melting of ice at higher temperatures. The unique discovery was made by a group of researchers from Ohio University and Queen’s University and is described in an article published on Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The discovery has implications not only for better understanding of the processes that occur in nature but may also have repercussions in technologies that use superconducting materials and nanoparticles.

2.5 nm: the width of a DNA molecule. 5 nm: the diameter of a hemoglobin molecule. Nanoparticles share with the building blocks of life in common which explains the enthusiasm of researchers for use in the medical setting: their size. As the proteins or other molecules of life, nanoparticles can cross cell membranes, without provoking an immune response. The properties of these nanocomposites open many possibilities in the treatment of diseases, including cancer.

The Titan’s electron microscope facility, considered the world’s most advanced and now has come to the University of Zaragoza, Aragon puts in the forefront of nanoscience research worldwide. It is the first such equipment installed in Spain, and throughout the Mediterranean area, which represents a qualitative leap in its research capacity and provide a level of excellence in the international arena.

At a cost of more than 11.2 million, financed by the Ministry of Science through an agreement with the Government of Aragon, the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory, University of Zaragoza where you installed the Titan becomes a single space integrated into the network of scientific-unique scepters Spain. That amount rises to 20 million euros, taking into account the 6 million already invested in other microscopy equipment used for some time, as the cost of other equipment to be received shortly.
