Electromagnetic fields could affect memory

Electromagnetic fields can interfere with learning processes in the brain. This report is prepared by researchers at the University of Bochum [1] (North Rhine-Westphalia) and published in the journal “PLoS ONE” on the basis of animal experiments [2]. The phone is rather safe, however, due to the low intensity of the emitted fields, moderate scientists. For occupations with high exposure, as in some telecommunications centers, some security services (observation satellite) or military centers, the boundaries should be checked.

The high-frequency electromagnetic fields (HEF) are used for radio, television, wireless, and now WiFi. They can generate heat in the tissues of the user, in proportion to the intensity of the field in question. Recent generations of UMTS mobile phones have the advantage of generating relatively low fields, up to 4.8 V / m, which limits the thermal effect on the brain tissue to about 0.1 ° C. The possible consequences of exposure of 30 minutes on the function and structure of the brain are not yet clear nor unequivocal. However, the researchers eminent assuming an increased permeability of the cell wall or an occurrence of learning disabilities.

Map 28: finally realize the first Analytical Engine, the forerunner of the computer

In December 1837 the British mathematician and engineer Charles Babbage published an article describing a mechanical computer now known as the “Analytical Engine” or “Babbage Machine”.

Considered a forerunner of the computer, it has never been made entirely. In October 2010, 173 years later, the computer scientist John Graham-Cumming [1] launched the project “Plan 28″ which aims to raise the money and skills necessary to achieve the first Analytical Engine. The project name is a reference to Plan No. 28, one of the most comprehensive done by Babbage. Several manufacturers and scientists have already offered their participation.

From its conception, the Analytical Engine, the size of a truck is supposed to work through a system of mechanical gears powered by steam. It consists of a central processing unit (called a mill) and a data storage system (the store). It is controlled by instructions and data entered on punch cards and the results can be printed. Charles Babbage first conceived the “differential machine” capable of performing calculations. But it does not contain all the elements, not including memory, making it a computer.

Given 100 years before building the first computer, the Analytical Engine was never built in its entirety. Charles Babbage attempted to make a simplified version but was unable to assemble a party before his death in 1871. British Science Association (BA, British Association for the Advancement of Science) was then terminated the project in discouraging the British government to continue funding. But the son of Charles Babbage, Henry, announced in 1910 have made the main part, the central unit. It is now exhibited at the Science Museum in London.

The project of John Graham-Cumming is to demonstrate that the Analytical Engine could have been made in the time of its inventor, which is of particular interest to historians of science and the industrial revolution. Once funds are collected, the first stage of the project will digitize and decrypt all documents written by Charles Babbage and now held by the Museum of Science. The engineer is constantly returned to the plans of his machine, a choice on concepetion should be done. The second step is the realization of a 3D digital model to simulate the operation of the machine. Finally the third and final step is to construct and operate a prototype of the Analytical Engine and thus be able to demonstrate that the computer would have happened 100 years earlier.

A team of researchers, Peter Barnum [1], Srinivasa Narasimhan [2] Takeo Kanade and [3], Carnegie Mellon University [4] in Pennsylvania, has unveiled a display technology on a screen composed of droplets water. This concept, called “3D Aqualux” was presented at SIGGRAPH 2010, [5], a major event in the field of computer graphics and interactive technologies, held July 27 in Los Angeles.

This is not the first time an image projection technology on water is announced. But whereas previous concepts did not control the party or the projected flow of the waterfall, it breaks new ground by tightly controlling the falling water droplets and synchronizing it with the projector.

To synchronize the droplets of water with the projector, the system includes a camera that filmed the waterfall 60 times per second (60Hz), a projector that displays as 60Hz, several generators of droplets that are capable of producing up 60 drops per second and overlapping in front of the projector and then a computer where software developed by the team can control the generation of droplets of water to ensure no drop no overlaps in line of sight of the projector.

A team of researchers at the University of Alcalá (UAH) has developed a system based on neural networks to accurately detect and predict a financial crisis, as published in the magazine Omega. The system of macroeconomic data and information provided by banks.

A multidisciplinary research group involving Sancho Salcedo and Jose Antonio Portilla, researchers and professors in the Department of Signal Theory at the University of Alcala, has developed a system based on techniques of nonlinear neural networks that can predict from information from a database of macroeconomic and banking, financial crisis.

“We had a fairly large database, with different parameters related to macroeconomic parameters over a hundred countries, compiled from 1981 to 1999. On the other hand, we had the data on whether the country had entered the systemic financial crisis in those years or not selected. Using neural network techniques present data for the network to learn and we have a system capable of predicting a financial crisis with a reliability of 91%, “says Salcedo.

Under the program Verdikt on information technology and communication , the Norwegian Research Council has granted MNOK 200 (about EUR 25 million ) for research projects on the Internet of the future. Over 120 MNOK (15 million euros ), representing 60% of the total, are devoted to research on social networks . 25 % ( 50 MNOK ) go to the Internet of Things and 15% ( 30 MNOK ) to the mobile internet .

“We had an exceptional number of applications , both from businesses and researchers. This confirms the mobilization of various actors in Norway to meet the challenges of the future of the Internet , social networks and in particular Social media is booming . What makes natural to devote more research on the mechanisms behind the “phenomenon ” says program coordinator Olaug Rad .

Example of areas where these technologies can be used: the online learning ( eLearning ) , telehealth ( e -health ) , the innovative processes in business, technology, games and e – government. It was the first call for research on the Internet of the future, a priority program Verdikt since 2009 and covers areas such as social networks , the Internet of Things and mobile Internet .
