This follows from the first global survey on the consumption of psychoactive substances in the workplace in Spain, presented today at the Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs. After managers, catering and construction workers and administrative staff are the most taken illegal substances.

“The drug prevention does not have a privileged area in the workplace,” said Nuria Espi, the Government Delegate to the National Drug Plan, which today has moderated III Conference on prevention and treatment in the workplace dropodependencias.

During the ceremony, presented data from the Household Survey on Alcohol and Drugs in Spain (AGE), held between 2007 and 2008, analyzing parameters such as prevalence of smoking, employment status, industry, professional, risks and actions prevention of drug use in the company where you work.

The analysis suggests that the drugs most consumed by the working population are snuff and alcohol, while women take hypnosedatives unemployed in greater proportion. The hospitality industry is spending more time exposed to smoke snuff and senior management are most at risk to consume alcohol.

To lose weight, or even avoid taking, avoid refined starches such as bread and white rice, and instead of eating a diet rich in protein and lean meat, dairy products with little Fat and beans.

This result comes from an extensive European study on diet, led by researchers at the University of Copenhagen. This study therefore compares the official dietary recommendations and concludes that they are not precise enough to prevent obesity.

Eating fruits, vegetables, fish, and do not eat too much fat. Having a balanced diet and be careful not to take too much weight. These recommendations are the official recommendations of most European countries, including Denmark. Researchers from the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen have now shown that these recommendations are insufficient for the prevention of obesity. Their results were published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine.

A new study published today in the journal ScienceDemonstrates for the first time that silencing of some of these genes causes the disappearance of tumors in the brain of fruit flies. This study opens the door to new research for developing therapies against this disease in humans.

IRB Barcelona scientists discovered that some brain tumors of the larva of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster using the genetic program of stem cells to grow. When the researchers removed some of these genes were normal brains, demonstrating its relevance in the development of tumors. The item has been led by Cayetano González ICREA researcher and published today in the journal Science.

One of the defining characteristics of tumor cells is immortality, which allows them to divide without obedience to external signals. These processes cause the formation of tissue masses in most cases interfere with the functions of the organs.

On the occasion of World AIDS Day, to be held tomorrow, the Minister of Health, Social Policy and Equality, Leire Pajin, today announced the balance of new diagnoses of HIV and AIDS in Spain. According to these data, in 2009, reported 2,264 new HIV diagnoses in the 15 autonomous regions (CC AA) that reported data, with an average age of 37 years and 20.5% of female cases.

Tomorrow marks the World AIDS Day. Therefore, the Ministry of Health, Social Affairs and Equal has presented the latest figures in its new campaign: ‘Quierete. Get tested. Use a condom ‘, to deal with a late diagnosis and to promote condom use.

“It’s important to remain vigilant with HIV, because in Spain it is estimated that between 25% and 30% of those affected do not know, even though HIV testing is free and confidential,” he Leire Pajin explained.

The data show that last year reported 2,264 new HIV diagnoses in 15 CC AA, with a mean age of 37 years, 20% of them women. A 50’2% of new diagnoses had late diagnosis and at the time of being identified as carriers of the virus were already eligible for antiretroviral treatment.

The moderate increase in protein and reducing foods with high glycemic index, such as refined flour or rice-husking help maintain a healthy diet and do not regain the lost kilos. This follows an investigation that has involved the professor of nutrition at the University of Navarra Alfredo Martinez and just published in one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world New England Journal of Medicine.

The study, part of Diogenes (Diet, Obesity and Genes) is the world’s most relevant analysis on the continuing long-term weight after following a diet. Altogether, the study assessed the dietary habits in 773 families in eight European countries. Including Spain, where the work is performed since 2005 in the Department of Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology at the University of Navarra.

-938 Volunteers-adults and 827 children lost their first 8% of its weight and then were subjected to five types of maintenance diet, all low in fat and no restrictions on calories, which continued for 26 weeks. The results, says nutrition expert Alfredo Martinez, “showed that a modest increase protein and decrease foods that provide energy quickly, have a high glycemic index, keeps lost kilos and even in some cases continue to fall weight. ”

Search and characterization of bioactive compounds of plants included in our daily diet has been identified in plants such as cauliflower chemopreventive agents against carcinogenic compounds present in what we eat. Benefits of isothiocyanates and indoles for cancer prevention seem obvious.

The research group UCM Chemopreventive strategies against Carcinogenic Chemicals in the Diet (Department of Nutrition, Food Science and Food Technology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), Evaluated the protective effect of AITC, the PEITC and I3C against DNA damage produced by N-Nitrosamines. The work has been done in vitro Cell culture, particularly using human hepatoma cells and testing Comet. In this study the DNA damage results in the formation of a comet, hence the name of this method.

The results have shown that the AITC, the PEITC and I3C protects human hepatoma cells against DNA damage induced by N-nitrosamines evaluated. The observed differences in the protective effect of these compounds indicate that the chemical structure plays a fundamental role. In addition, there is good correlation between the protective effect of AITC, the I3C and PEITC and their mechanisms of action.

Spanish researchers have calculated the probability of death by accident as the response time care. The conclusion is stark : to reduce from 25 to 15 minutes waiting time from the occurrence of an accident until they reach the emergency services would be associated with a reduced risk of death in third.

“In Spain , the average waiting time since an accident occurs until they reach the emergency medical services is about 25 minutes, “he explains to SINC Rocío Sanchez- Mangas, study co-author and researcher at the Autonomous University of Madrid ( UAM).

Their research, published by the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention “Is based on information from two databases: the records of the General Traffic Directorate (DGT ) with full details of the accident, and another study of the DGT May 2004 , with information on the time of the accident , the call emergency services and their arrival at the scene . By merging the two bases, was obtained a sample of 1463 accidents on Spanish roads.

The late arrival of the sunset after the end of winter, it adds more of sunlight at the end of the afternoon, and that creates a biochemical response in adolescents who also slows the rise in melatonin levels preceding the onset of sleepiness in the evenings. So what new research reveals.

Mariana Figueiro, Research Center of Enlightenment, under the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and coauthor of the study, notes that when this phenomenon triggered by the delayed arrival of sunset plus you have to get up early to go to school This delay in the onset of sleep can lead teens to sleep less hours than necessary, which in turn leads to difficulty concentrating, abnormal changes in mood, and increased risk of developing obesity. Apart from the adverse health effects, reduced school performance is presented as an obvious consequence of this situation.

Disruption of sleep cycle occurs twice. In addition to exposure to more sunlight in the evening, many adolescents also suffer from the problem of not enough exposure to sunlight in the morning, for example by passing it in classrooms with little natural light. With that reduced exposure to morning sunlight, it can not adequately stimulate the body’s normal cycle, which also contributes to delay the time that adolescents sleep.
