UPM researchers have developed a procedure that estimates the power released by a fire in a tunnel, improving both the design of security systems and intervention in case of accident.

In collaboration with the company EuroestudiosResearchers from the ETSI Industriales UPM, have developed a procedure to estimate the power released by a fire in a road tunnel longitudinal ventilation. This procedure uses sensors that can be installed in tunnels in operation for use in case of an accident arising out of a fire.

The power released is one of the most important parameters when necessary corrective actions to minimize the damage caused by a fire in a tunnel. This issue is of utmost importance to the construction of tunnels getting longer and fatalities have occurred (St. Gotthard (11 deaths), Tauern (12 deaths), MontBlanc (39 dead), …).

The Japanese public works company Taisei has developed a new method for revegetation of slopes , more economical and more environmentally friendly

The presence of plants on the slopes is critical in so far as their roots hold the soil and thus help to stabilize it . They prevent soil erosion by rain which could cause mudslides and landslides. Revegetate bare ground is therefore crucial , especially if it is located along a road or near homes . However, the slope of the field greatly complicates the operation.

The most widely used in Japan is to plant seeds mixed with mud and spread throughout the field to revegetate . A stainless steel mesh stretched to hold the mixture and prevent it from being dragged by rain until the roots of new plants are sufficiently developed to perform this function. This technique is particularly costly because of the use of such pumps for discharging the mud

Siltek Czech company has developed a new method to repair cracks and pot-holes in the roads. The technique is based on heating the damaged area of the road and on the use of waste asphalt from asphalt pavement cuts, and recycling.

One panel, heated to a temperature of 150 ° C, is placed over the repair area to soften the asphalt, then after ten minutes of recycled asphalt is added. A vibrating roller then standardizes area. About 15 minutes later, the road can be reopened to traffic.
