Juan Manuel Garcia-Ruiz is a research professor of the CSIC Crystallographic Studies Laboratory (LEC) from Granada (Spain). In 2005 he received the Maimonides Award granted by the Junta de Andalucia for their contributions to the field of crystallography.
His main field of study is self-organizing phenomena in biological and geological structures. He has assembled biomorphs able inorganic crystals, questioning the biological origin of which are considered the oldest fossils of our planet, affecting existing models on the origin of life. It is an international expert in drug and protein crystallization, including crystallization in space. This field has several patents as the “crystallization reactor Granada ‘that has been acquired by the Japanese space agency JAXA and the European Space Agency (ESA).
Expert in crystallography and its applications to various fields, he has authored over 150 scientific publications in such prestigious journals as Nature, Science or Geology and used to write popular science articles in major Spanish newspapers.
