RoboCup 2010 competition

Singapore hosted from 19 to 25 June 2010 , the event ” RoboCup 2010 ” with the robot Aldebaran Robotics’ NAO French as an official partner. This event annually brings together nearly 3,000 researchers and students from 40 countries . Participants competed in football games. Simulations support the person were also held.

RoboCup 2010 is an international competition for teams of research around the world to compete and test their work . It also hosts workshops, exhibitions and conferences around the robotics and artificial intelligence. Its first edition took place in 1992 and its ultimate goal is to develop a team of fully autonomous humanoid robots that can play and win against the football team world champion in 2050 .

Aldebaran Robotics , the provider of robots

Since 2008 , the French company Aldebaran Robotics‘ Nao robot has provided its approximately two hundred of the most prestigious institutions of higher education: the Stanford Research Institute, Harvard Supelec School of Arts and Trades, KAIST in Korea , Tsukuba University, Japan .. . Nao is used in over 27 countries and 85% of sales take place abroad. There are two subsidiaries abroad , first in Boston and the second in Shanghai.

Nao has a flexible programming interface to the skill level of the user . One of the objectives of Aldebaran Robotics and encourage students to embark upon a career in science and create new jobs around this innovative tool .

” The Three Musketeers ” , the French team at Robocup 2010

Since its inception, the RoboCup together scientists and students from prestigious institutions around the world a single platform . Again this year , candidates have been creative and responsive to value their work and their skills in this league. France was represented by the team of ” Three Musketeers “in reference to the novel by Alexandre Dumas , who finished mid-table . The four robots are named respectively “D’Artagnan , Aramis , Athos and Porthos .

Their goal is to make the biped robots as autonomous as possible , so they are able to navigate in an unknown environment , a priori , by performing a mapping of the place , and move from one place to another without obstacles in their path . For this team, participation in RoboCup 2010 in the category standard platform was the opportunity to test their knowledge on a football field adapted . For this 2010 edition , the team from the Universities of Paris VIII and Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines , incorporated Spanish students from the Universities of Murcia and Valencia. From simple strategy , their primary objective was to get their robots to play football properly , without uncontrolled movements .

Alongside the competition

The fourteenth edition of the RoboCup International Symposium was held in parallel to the competition. This symposium enables discussion and scientific exchange about a variety of research areas related to all divisions of RoboCup . Interdisciplinary, it does so not only limited to research and teaching in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence and allows comparison of theory and practice.

Alongside the competition and this symposium , various activities and exhibitions were also organized. For example , a CafĂ© Scientifique on robotics , animated by the team of “Three Musketeers ” , was held June 25, 2010 at the Singapore Science Centre. It was an opportunity to discover the research team and the skills they have with their robots, to the delight of young and old.

Conclusion

The experimental and interactive RoboCup is an opportunity to disseminate new ideas and promising technologies that are quickly adopted and field tested by a growing community of professionals .

More generally, researchers involved in robotics aim to bring biped robots to operate in an unknown environment , to acquire new skills and perform in complete autonomy, useful tasks in everyday life. These robots can be used by elderly and disabled in their homes .
