The Initial results of collisions of high energy protons LHC Particle Accelerator first glimpse into the particle physics that occurs in a new frontier of levels energy, after energy reached record values in these experiments.

A team of researchers from MIT, CERN and the Institute of Investigation of Particle and Nuclear Physics in Budapest, Hungary, has completed the first analysis of the results of those collisions. The results show that collisions produced a number unexpectedly high particles called mesons, an event which will to be taken into account when physicists start looking particles rarer and the hypothetical Higgs boson.

This is the very first step on a long road that will make highly sensitive analysis, which can detect particles that only occur in one in one thousand million collisions.

The main authors of the analysis, are the teachers of Gunther Roland MIT, Wit Busza and Boleslaw Wyslouch.

n the particle accelerator LHC (acronym in English that meansĀ  Large Hadron Collider, or Large Hadron Collider), built under land near Geneva, Switzerland, the proton beams circulating in Inside the ring 27 kilometers collided with a maximum power 2.36 teraelectronvoltios (TeV), beating the previous record of 1.96 TeV achieved in the accelerator at Fermilab in the United States.

For decades, physicists are analyzing the number of particles of each class produced as a result of collisions high energy. So we know that when protons collide, their energy is transformed predominantly into particles called mesons, specifically, two types of mesons known as pions and kaons.

To his surprise, the authors of the new analysis found that the number of these particles increased more rapidly with the energy of the collision than predicted by their models, based on the results of lower energy collisions.

Using the LHC, physicists hope to eventually find the Higgs, a mysterious hypothetical particle that gives mass to the other particles, and evidence of other physical phenomena enigmatic as supersymmetry and extra dimensions of space.

The LHC is capable of causing up to 14 TeV collisions, but Scientists are gradually intensifying the power of the machine for security reasons.
